Wow, it has been a busy winter/spring for the Paffrath family!!
Aside from preparing for our big 90th year in business, I have been keeping busy traveling, coaching & spending time with my family.
Arizona was the first stop in my travels. Hiking the Grand Canyon was the highlight of that trip. It was a long hike down and even longer hike up. One word describes that experience: Spectacular!
Hawaii was the next stop on my list of travels. We attended my niece Alex’s wedding. She is the daughter of my late brother, Ted. It was an emotional yet beautiful ceremony. I look forward to the upcoming reception here in Minnesota.
Here, back home, I have been keeping busy in the store as well as spending time with my Grandkids. They keep us busy with all they’re sporting events and shows. Babysitting them is always a joy. We have had some nice weather and got to play around on the tire swing as well as “litter bugging” which is our term for picking up trash.
As you may have read, it’s year number 90 for us at the Paffrath and Son Store! We recently made the local paper and have decorated the store with balloons and 90s. We look forward to celebrating this special event throughout the the rest of the year. In honor of this milestone, we are even giving away a .90 point diamond! Come in and sign up!
Happy May Day,
Did you know that we can do custom work? From mother’s rings, to earrings, and necklaces, to wedding rings, Jeff (and staff) and make it all. Custom work seems to be more and more popular as time goes on. Everyone wants a piece that speaks to them, or one that has a story behind it.
If a customer brings in their old, unused jewelry, and would like to use it again, Jeff can create a one-of-a-kind piece that everyone will swoon over. If you happen to have a signature from a loved one, and you would like it on a pendant, ring, or bracelet, bring it in, and we can engrave the exact signature on your desired piece.
The best place to spark your creativity is on Pinterest! We have many people who come into the store with photos on their phones from Pinterest. We love to make your dreams come to life! Feel free to bring in your favorite photos, and we sure can whip something up for you! 🙂
The most coveted quartz, amethyst is celebrated for its calming, deep violet hue. From a Greek word meaning “not drunk,” amethyst was also the name of a legendary maiden transformed into a purple stone by Bacchus, the god of wine.
According to the GIA Institute, Amethyst was as expensive as ruby and emerald until the 19th Century, when Brazil’s large deposits were discovered.
As February’s birthstone, you can find some of the prettiest jewelry set up with amethysts. From a very light purple, to a deep purple, it look gorgeous in white, yellow, or rose gold.

January’s birthstone, a garnet is a beautiful, hardy, and abundant gem with a distinct and desirable color profile. They come in many different shapes, sizes, and different colors as well, not such the burgundy red. It is true to say that red is the colour most often encountered, but the garnet also exists in various shades of green, a tender to intense yellow, a fiery orange and some fine earth-coloured nuances. The only colour it cannot offer is blue.
According to gemstone.org, “Garnets have been known to Man for thousands of years. Noah, it is said, used a garnet lantern to help him steer his ark through the dark night.” Pretty cool, right?
We have a wide selection of garnets here at the store, so please stop in, and try on. If you would like to see a different color of garnet, we will get that in for you too. 🙂
See you soon!
We hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Year! It amazes me every year how wonderful it is to have such wonderful family, friends, and of course, customers. From repeat customers, to brand new customers, we are truly blessed for each and every one of you, and we thank you for your business! 🙂

My granddaughter, Ava, is very musically talented. She won third place at the Minnesota State Fair this past summer, for a song she wrote by herself, and then sang beautifully. I am just a proud grandpa, and I had to share her most recent performance at church, where she sang “How Great Thou Art”. Gives me goose bumps every time.
Thanks for watching!

Your jewelry is meant to be worn! Right? Some people never take them off. Ever. Seriously. During landscaping, baking, painting, marathons, weight lifting, you name it. We know it’s hard to part with your special pieces, but know that just like everything else, your jewelry needs special care. Over time, prongs can wear down, and so can your band. Chains can stretch out. Earring post threads will wear down too. Here are some of our best tips to keep your jewelry safe and perfect for a long time!
- Remove all jewelry before going into a hot tub or swimming pool. The chlorine can damage and discolor metals such as gold and platinum and can slowly erode the finish and polish of gemstones. Same goes with entering salt water as it can have the same effect as chlorine on your fine jewelry.
- Remove all jewelry before doing anything strenuous. Whether it’s with your hands, or if you are expecting to get sweaty. Sweat can change the look of sterling silver, or it can leave some with reactions to their skin with gold. This can be restored to their new look with a professional cleaning.
- After wearing your fine jewelry, wipe it down with a clean, soft, slightly damp cloth. This will enhance the jewelry’s luster and will ensure that it is clean before storage.
- Remove all jewelry before showering, cleaning, applying lotions, and sunscreen. These products cause a film to form on your jewelry, making it appear dull and dingy.
- Store your jewelry in a clean, dry place.
- Keep your jewelry in a fabric-lined jewelry case, or in a box with compartments and dividers to prevent pieces from scratching each other.
- Every 6 months, take it to a reputable jeweler and have it professionally cleaned to maintain the luster and sparkle of your precious baubles.
We always check and clean jewelry for free!

Paffrath and Son Jewelers has been around for nearly 90 years – we will be celebrating this Summer! Since opening in 1926, the jewelry industry has grown and changed. Jeff, our fourth generation jewelry, is keeping up with the times, and he is able to bring back the classic look to a ring that was purchased here 85+ years ago.
Jeff can make just about anything for you. Looking for a particular shape with certain stones in it? Jeff can make those dreams come true. Do you have an old ring that has sentimental value, but it’s maybe cracked or broken? Jeff has the perfect eye to make it new again. All of our repairs are done in house – they never leave the store. Our average turnaround time is within a week. Jeff is very tedious in his work, and will make sure that it turns out perfectly.
Jeff also has a bit of a creative side. He has made several different style necklaces, and rings that would make a wonderful gift for Christmas! Mila was created for his wife, Marni, and has since grown as a gift favorite for many others. Mila was also featured on the Red Stamp blog in their Minnesota Holiday Gift Guide!
